Ornothology, Ornitholgy, Ornotholigy... Birdwatching

This weekend is the Big Garden Birdwatch, an annual event, and it got me thinking about all things ornithological. It’s very spring like here at the moment. Beautifully so in fact, blue skies, warming spots of sun. For nature it’s the phase where everything seems to happen at once. Flowerheads spring up, insects appear and birdsong fills otherwise empty skies.

I’m sure the majority of cyclists, like me, love the outdoors. They must do, it’s part of being out on the bike. Only yesterday my cycling buddy pointed out two Bonelli Eagles, what an absolute treat! I admit, I am not particularly skilled in identifying birds or birdsong. I’d like to be, and I do try, but, I’m not. However, the beauty of technology has enabled me this year to use the Merlin app to identify birdsong while out on rides. And there’s been plenty. Chaffinches, Pipts, Sparrows, Warblers, Owls, Serins, Blackcaps and Robins to name but a few. And all I ever need to do is stop and take a few moments peace while tuning in to the environment. Sounds like a great plan, and one I intend to keep doing.
