The Rules – The way of the cycling disciple

Updated: Jan 3

It’s that time of year when the nights arrive early and the days begin later. A book can be greatly appreciated along with a cup of tea and a biscuit or two.

A friend recently passed me ‘The Rules’ by the Velominati, the keepers of the cog. They clearly thought I had some learning to do. I was quickly hooked. As stated in the blurb, this is the bible of rules for the Velominati. NB, the ‘Velominati’ is those who live and breathe cycling. Probably you? Regardless, it’s all explained in the ‘Lexicon’ section.

The 95 rules are outlined with humour and include examples of the ‘rules’ in practise from the authors experiences and those observed in the pro-peloton. Unknowingly many of these cycling rules were already governing my life. This is even more surprising when considering that I wasn’t aware there were unofficial official unwritten rules that have been written down. I appreciated rules such as #40, ‘tyres are to be mounted with the label centred over the valve stem’, because it’s quicker to find the valve - brilliant. I dismissed rules such as #33, because I’m too lazy, and I don't crave smooth, hair free legs. And I found #5 a great rule to live by and answer most problems with.

With most rules being only a page or two it was easy to pick up and read at anytime. There were laugh out loud moments as well as enlightening information and some history thrown in for good measure. Enjoyable and well worth a read whilst waiting for longer days to return.
